What are cookies?

Cookies are pieces of data normally stored in text files, that websites place on visitors’ computers or other devices such as smartphones or tablets, used to visit a site. Cookies usually contain the name of the website they belong to, their expiry date (i.e. how long they are stored in the browser’s memory) and a code, normally a randomly generated number.

What do we use cookies for?

These cookies do not identify you as an individual. Lack of acceptance of these cookies may negatively affect the performance of the website or parts thereof.

They can also allow users to watch videos, play games and engage with social tools such as blogs, chat rooms and forums. These cookies can also be used to remember which websites you have already visited and they may share this information with third parties. Most cookies of this type track consumers via their IP address, so they may collect some personally identifiable information.

Types of cookies

Two types of cookies are used on websites: ’session cookies’ and ’persistent cookies’.

  • session cookies:are stored temporarily on the user’s device and will expire at the end of the session.
  • persistent cookies:are saved on the user’s device much longer, unless the user deletes them manually. As persistent cookies are created by giving them an expiry date, if they reach that expiry date they will be destroyed by the computer.

Some pages can collect data through ‘pixel tags’ (also known as ‘clear gifs’), that might be shared with third parties directly involved in promotional activities and implementation of websites. For example, data regarding people visiting specific websites may be shared with advertising firms in order to better target the banner ads.
